When people think of New York City the almost exclusively envision Manhattan. That famous skyline that is instantly recognizable, the crowded streets, Times Square, and Central Park are sights almost anyone would recognize as New York. A few more savy travellers my even know a few sights in Brooklyn. For the real local flavor you’ll need to head to Queens.
The home of the NY Mets, Queens is a lot more than just baseball and a couple of airports, it boasts the most park land of NYC’s five boros. Explore the trails in Kissena Park and while you’re there do a few laps around the only public velodrome in the city. For more adventure take to the mountain bike trails of Cunningham park where you can enjoy an outdoor movie on certain summer nights. Or continue your ride down the old Vanderbilt Motor Parkway into Alley Pond park and search for New York City’s oldest living tree. Saving the best for last be sure to take a picture under the Unisphere in Flushing Meadow park.
