I am definitely on team “routine” here. I like knowing what I will be doing ahead of time and don’t like it when I am forced to deviate from a plan. That’s probably why I can work a 9-5 job and not mind it.
What is it about the routine that is so alluring? I think it is the promise that if the right path is followed things will take care of themselves. It’s an engineering approach to life. The idea that if anything bad happens it could have been prevented with a better plan.
As I’ve grown older I’ve seen how things can go from routine to chaos pretty quickly. Being able to switch modes to spontaneity is certainly important. And I have tried living in a more spontaneous way on occasion. Still I prefer to know what is going to happen ahead of time.
