Wednesday morning. Work was forcing me to take a week off. New requirements they said. Use the vacation time or lose it. They never complained before about letting me lose it but now I would have to take it. My plan was to read, sleep, and exercise.
First thing was waking up early and going for a morning hike through the preserve. I had all day so I packed a lunch and went in deep. After an hour I stopped for lunch and a quick read. Right there in the center of the preserve I saw dresser. Not unlike the one from my childhood bedroom. Curious I walked to it. The wood still had that shine like it was new. Not weathered as I expected a piece of furniture would be in the middle of a nature preserve. I checked the ground for tracks but there were none. No sign of how the thing got here. Not even a sign that the wildlife found an interest in it. I gave it a quick hard shake and it felt empty but there was a noticeable thud in the top drawer. I opened it and found a wad of cash. It disappeared into my bag and went home keeping an eye in my back the whole way out.
One thousand hundred dollar bills. Rolled to together they felt powerful like a revolver in the hand. It felt like it had its own plans. Pulling me in all sorts of directions. I knew what I had to do. Google Flights, round trip to Las Vegas.
…This prompt is more than I can handle right now. I should expand it to a full story.
