“You mean which three foods I like the most?”
“No. You’re not getting it. I want to know the foods that describe your personality. It’s maybe something you don’t like at all.”
“Or something I’ve never tried?”
“Sure…I guess. Just tell me already”
The conversation had been going on like this for a while. Phil was trying to stall for time while thinking about which foods would describe his personality in just the right way to impress his Tinder date Chloe without being an outright lie.
“Ok, first is” Phil thought and imagined the last thing he had for lunch “a California roll.”
Chloe’s eyes widened, “Now we’re on to something. Explain what that says about your personality.”
“Well if you look at it from the outside you would you might assume it is very ordinary and boring. White rice.” Chloe smiled and produced a small laugh. Phil took this as a good sign. “But on the inside-”
Chloe cut him off, “Filled with all sorts of tasty stuff.” She smiled and Phil’s heart sped up. “Good start. What’s next on the menu.” The emphasis she placed on the word menu indicated the pun was deliberate and she wanted you to know she wasn’t the least bit embarrassed about that fact.
Phil leaned back feeling more confident. Again he imagined a recent snack and said, “Yogurt.”
“Just plain yogurt?”
“Well I like it with granola and I’ll usually have one of the flavors. I like key lime pie the best.”
“I’ve never had key lime pie yogurt. It sounds good.”
“Oh yeah, it’s the best. A little sweet, a little tart you can’t go wrong.”
“Hold on, this isn’t about yogurts.” Chloe became more serious. “What does the key lime pie yogurt say about your personality?”
“Well I don’t mean that flavor specifically.” Phil stopped to think.
“You better not use that ‘white and boring line again.’” Phil laughed. He was warming up to Chloe’s sense of humor.
“No, it’s because I’m well cultured.” Chloe let out an audible laugh this time.
“That’s not fair.” Chloe continued to chuckle. “You can’t just pick a food to make a pun.”
“I can if it’s also true. Come home with me and check out my bookshelf. See if I’m lying.”
Chloe blushed a little. Phil’s texts had been more subdued and she wasn’t expecting an invitation back to his place on the first date even if it was a joke. “You’re going to have to tell me the third food first. I never go home with a guy if I don’t know his full personality.”
Phil nodded and thought of the last food to say. “Coconut. Because it’s hard to dig down and get to know that real me. But when you do, it’s worth it.”
