As unlikely as it seems the last thing that inspired me is this YouTube channel that does creepypasta readings. The thing about it is the stories he’s selecting are all pretty compeling to me but for reasons I can’t understand. I’m listening to them trying to figure out what makes a good story and what makes a story fail. From what I’m seeing a good story needs to have some mystery. There needs to be something to think about. A sort of nut that is begging to be cracked open. Where these stories fail is when they come off as hallow. When I think the shell is empty I loss interest.
The stories I’ve liked the best are the ones that hover just on the edge of believable. That knife’s edge that makes me not sure if this is real and leaves a sense of dread behind. There was a series of postings from this anon claiming he was sharing entries from his grandfather’s old Soviet police notebook documenting unusual cases. This ranks high on the believable scale. So to do the strange occultist murders. And nothing too unusual happens except you wonder what is a coincidence and what might be more.
In the end that’s why I’m writing too. I just want to find that edge and think about the things in my life. What is a coincidence and what is something more?
